Area gas prices down two cents in the last week
Triple A Mid-Atlantic says gas prices in Virginia area down three cents in the last week, up ten cents in a month and about four cents cheaper than on this day last year. Fredericksburg gas prices are down two cents since last week.
Angel Cups put safety first
Heart racing, Bennett Slosman stood before a live audience on April 17 at the Crowdfunded Pitch Night during the Tom Tom Festival, a weeklong celebration of music, art, and ideas held in Charlottesville, Virginia. He had three minutes to sell the crowd on a new product he and University of Richmond classmates Vasko Georgiev and William Johnston were developing. Their idea for Angel Detection Solutions, a business venture that will produce a disposable cup that detects when a date-rape drug is added to a drink, was selected as the audience favorite from among 11 finalists. The students won $2,000.
VCU, city of Richmond conduct full-scale hazmat spill training on campus
More than 150 people participated, including first responders, university and city staff, and volunteers. Yellow caution tape, ambulances and firetrucks cordoned off the area around the Commons at Virginia Commonwealth University on Thursday morning for a major emergency exercise involving personnel from VCU, the city of Richmond and state and local agencies.
Lane and sidewalk closures to begin on Broad and Belvidere streets amid construction of CoStar Center for Arts and Innovation
Due to construction of the CoStar Center for Arts and Innovation at Virginia Commonwealth University, one northbound lane and the sidewalk on North Belvidere Street between West Grace and West Broad streets, as well as one eastbound lane and the sidewalk on West Broad between North Belvidere and North Henry Street, are expected to be closed from July 30 until construction is complete, which is anticipated by late 2027.
City of Richmond announces plan for repairs to Tredegar Pipeline Trail Pipe following sewage spill
The City of Richmond continues to work with the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) regarding two isolated events that occurred during July 2024 at the Tredegar Pipeline Trail. These are two separate incidents and not a continual leak. Initial investigation showed that the first leak on July 2 was related to a wet weather event and was exacerbated by a stormwater connection from an adjacent commercial property. The City reported this to DEQ within 24 hours as required. The City of Richmond Department of Public Utilities confirmed there were no leaks on July 3. There were also no citizen reports of the pipe leaking for the two weeks between the two incidents. The July 2 incident has been closed by DEQ.
