MURFREESBORO – A high speed chase that covered nearly 24 miles and two counties ended with the arrest of a Woodland man on Sunday.

Hertford County Sheriff Dexter Hayes reported that Tyrell Davon Williams, age 33, is charged with felony flee to elude arrest along with numerous drug charges after narcotics – 31.8 grams of marijuana and 25 ecstasy (MDMA) pills – were found his vehicle.

Hayes said HCSO Sgt. K. Swain and Deputy M. Jones were on patrol Sunday at which time they observed a Ford truck traveling south on Benthall Bridge Road. Sgt. Swain conducted an informational check of the vehicle, revealing an expired registration plate and a surrender notification from the DMV.

Swain and Jones attempted to catch up to the vehicle when Williams attempted to evade them by making an abrupt turn onto a side road. The deputies activated their emergency lights and siren in an effort to stop the vehicle, but Williams increased his speed in an attempt to flee arrest.

The suspect vehicle ran several stop signs and reached speeds up to 95 mph, Hayes said.

The pursuit went into Northampton County and then back into Hertford County, where the suspect drove into a field, got stuck, and then fled on foot into a wooded where Swain, K-9 Cannon, and Jones made the arrest.

The officers also found a set of scales in the vehicle along with one marijuana roll-up cigarette.

The truck was seized, Hayes said.

The drug charges filed against Williams include possession with the intent to sale an/or deliver marijuana, one felony count of possession with the intent to sale an/or deliver MDMA, one felony count of maintaining a vehicle to store illegal drugs, and a misdemeanor count of resisting a public officer.

Hayes commended Swain, Jones, and K-9 Cannon for their actions.
