Mt. Vernon teen charged with three counts of aggravated battery following incident at St. Mary’s Hospital
A 19-year-old Mt. Vernon teen has been charged in Marion County Court with three counts of aggravated battery following an altercation at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital. Alana Schmidt of Richview Road was charged with two counts of aggravated battery to a private security officer after allegedly pushing two security officers with her hand. The third count is for aggravated battery to a nurse for allegedly striking a nurse at the hospital in the jaw with her hand.
Franklin County Collector Mails Out 2024 Mobile Home Tax Bills
BENTON – Franklin County Collector Steve Vercellino says 2024 Mobile Home tax bills were mailed out Friday. Payment is due no later than Wednesday, Sept. 18. Payments can be accepted in person at the Treasurer’s Office in the Campbell Building on the Benton Square at 901 Public Square or by mailing your payment to P.O. Box 967 in Benton, Illinois.

Salem man charged with harassment through electronic communications
A 51-year-old Salem man has been charged in Marion County Court with felony harassment through electronic communication. Richard Hester II of East Rainey Street is accused of leaving a voice mail on another person’s phone threatening to kill them. Salem Police earlier said Hester was upset with a Facebook message left by the person he threatened. Hester was arrested when police later went to his home on a domestic disturbance.
Odin School Board approves new scoreboards and acts on personnel issues
The Odin School Board has approved the purchase of new scoreboards and backboards from the main gym. Superintendent Belinda Kirgan says the new shot clock required by the Illinois High School Association for the 2026-27 school year will be included. The current score board and backboards will be moved to the small gym as part of an overall upgrade that includes painting.
