1 charged, 4 escape after sleeping man is mugged on the Red Line
CHICAGO — Charges have been filed against one person, but four more suspects remain at large after a man was mugged on the Red Line at 95th Street, police say. Prosecutors said a group of people targeted a 29-year-old man as he slept on the train around 7:40 a.m. on July 12.
Three charged in murder of Chicago firefighter
Three men have been charged in connection with the 2023 murder of a Chicago firefighter and associated financial crimes. Nicholas Virgil, 37, a resident of the 14200 block of South Stewart Avenue in Riverdale, and Martez Cristler, 22, a resident of the 6800 block of Baring Avenue in Hammond, Ind., were both charged with three counts of murder, one count of aggravated arson and two counts of arson in connection with the death of Chicago firefighter Jermaine Pelt.
15 years for man who violently attacked and robbed 75-year-old woman on the NW Side
CHICAGO — A Cook County judge sentenced a man on Thursday to 15 years in prison for viciously attacking and robbing a 75-year-old woman outside a Portage Park grocery store. Oswaldo Garza, 47, was also accused of mugging a 79-year-old woman and an 85-year-old woman outside the same store in separate attacks, but prosecutors dropped those cases before trial, court records show.
