Raging blaze destroys mill building near Massachusetts-Rhode Island line

The roof of a mill building near the Massachusetts-Rhode Island line collapsed early Monday morning as a massive blaze engulfed and destroyed the vacant structure.

The mill fire broke out around 1 a.m. at an old chemical manufacturing facility at 20 Privilege Street in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, not far from Harris Pond in Blackstone, Massachusetts.

Documents on the city’s website indicate the mill was constructed in 1902 and the property has been owned by CNC International since 1988.

Video showed bright orange flames illuminating the night sky and thick smoke billowing from the rubble as crews from multiple communities worked to knock down the fire.

Firefighters were also seen high up on ladder trucks dousing the blaze with water from above.

The building was completely reduced to a pile of charred debris.

There were no immediate reports of any injuries and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

According to the city’s website, there is a four-story, 197,432-square-foot mill building and a three-story, 29,160-square-foot mill building on the 4.09-acre site on Privilege Street.

Records also showed that CNC International owned and conducted operations on a contiguous 2.33-acre property in Blackstone.
