As summer swings into full bloom and the aroma of barbecuing burgers and brats on the grill permeates the air, it is time once again to share a guide to some of the best places in the area to get a good burger.

There are so many places to enjoy a burger in Holmes and Wayne counties, and just not enough time to get to every single one of them, so we recruited some assistance to share the experience.

Bryan Schaaf, self-proclaimed hamburglar who moonlights as chef liaison for Certified Angus Beef in Wooster, offered a few of his favorite places to procure a good slice of beef.

"For me, the two most iconic old school burgers in Wooster are the Nutty Muffit at Bishops and the double burger at the Green Leaf," Schaaf said.

    Bishop's: Nutty Muffit

The Nutty Muffit is a double cheeseburger topped with homemade slaw and gourmet nuts, and one of the more popular burger selections at Bishop's on Old Columbus Road in Wooster.

Bishop's has a wide selection of other burgers as well, like the Big Tex or the bacon swiss, the chuck wagon or the Big J.

Schaaf added the bar burger at City Square and the Mushroom and Swiss at Muddy’s also are among his favorites.

    Green Leaf: Classic double

The Green Leaf Restaurant on Cleveland Road has been a staple in Wooster for 60 years, and the double burger is one of those iconic meals that have helped to make the restaurant so popular.

The double is a classic double cheeseburger that comes with lettuce, pickle and Green Leaf's special sauce.

As Schaaf pointed out, you can't go wrong with this one. You know they've been doing it right for 60 years, he said.

    Muddy's: Brock's F-5

The selection of burgers at Muddy's Chillin' & Grillin' on East Liberty Street in Wooster is almost overwhelming, and depending on what you crave, it has just the right bite for you.

From the massive and spicy Brock's F-5, which is five patties served on flat bread with desert fire sauce, onion straws, mayo, lettuce and tomato, to the Big Mike, the 50/50 (bacon and beef), the Mushroom and Swiss or the veggie burger, there is some something for everyone.

    Iron Pony: Mushroom and swiss

At the Iron Pony on state Route 3 near Lakeville, the burgers are big and tasty, featuring a fan favorite, the Iron Pony burger, made from locally sourced black Angus beef.

Jerry Stroup of Shreve says the mushroom and swiss burger is his favorite. He cites the quality of the beef and the way they are cooked as to what makes the burgers so good.

"They always cook them just right," he said. "They use good, quality beef from local farms. I've never been disappointed here."

Blue Moon Bistro: Bubba's Belly Buster

Blue Moon Bistro on state Route 83 just south of Holmesville is developing a reputation for the tasty half-pound hamburgers.

Owner Shayann Galvan says it takes just the right amount of seasoning and top quality beef to give the burgers their great flavor.

Bubba's Belly Buster is among the more popular burgers. It's double burger made with Swiss and American cheese, and topped with onion rings, lettuce, tomato and Shyann's secret sauce.

    Daybreak Bistro: The 1095

Daybreak Bistro opened last summer in Millersburg and its burgers quickly became a favorite.

And with the recent move into evening hours on the weekend, it has expanded its selections to include an OG Smash Burger, The Burg, Mushroom and Swiss, The 1095 and a pulled pork burger.

Daybreak Bistro owner Brandon Hershberger says they have found their niche with burgers and hope to continue to develop more choices as they restaurant continues to develop.

Bag's Sports Pub: Mushroom and chipotle sauce

Special seasoning on each and every burger add to the distinct flavor of a burger at Bag's Sports Pub on East Jackson in Millersburg. The burgers are made with fresh certified Angus beef and topped with a choice of cheese, lettuce on a grilled pretzel bun or a regular white bun.

To spice things up a little, you can try the jalapeno cheddar burger or a mushroom and chipotle sauce burger, or a BBQ bacon cheeseburger. The pub even offers a pizza burger. Whichever you choose, you are sure to enjoy.
