WORCESTER – On your mark. Get set. Stop!
Modified car owners will cool their engines on Mercantile Plaza Thursday afternoon to raise money for charity by organization SQUAD-Driven.
Modified or custom cars are sports vehicles that are enhanced for higher performance or aesthetics.
Tyler Skenderian, a spokesperson for SQUAD-Driven, said the event will aim to collect donations for Quincy-based Stay Driven Charitable Foundation which helps veterans, children fighting life-threatening diseases and underserved communities.
Mercantile Plaza is located in downtown Worcester between the Mercantile Building and the Commercial Street Parking Garage.
About 20 vehicles are expected to show up at the event, Skenderian said Friday, and the event will be free to the public. It will run from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
“Automotive enthusiasts will meet up and speak about the vehicles,” said Skenderian.
SQUAD-Driven's social media event page says that a brewery will be open during the event and a deejay will also perform.
In June, Salem-based brewery Notch Brewing popped open a seasonal beer garden at Mercantile Plaza.
During Thursday’s event, SQUAD-Driven will collect $20 per parked car on the plaza which will be put towards the charity, according to Skenderian.
Those interested must complete a form describing their vehicle for a chance to be allowed on the plaza.
If spots on the plaza are filled, the first floor of the nearby Commercial Street Parking Garage will be kept clear for more vehicles, according to SQUAD-Driven's event page.
Skenderian added that this will be SQUAD-Driven's first of four charity events in two months.
Among other events, one in Palmer will allow modified car owners to showcase their performance vehicles while running laps around the Palmer Motorsports Park track.
In August, SQUAD-Drive will organize a four-day driving event in Toronto; similarly, they will organize a four-day driving event in Lake Placid, New York in September.
