    Saturday's local college roundup: Clark women's soccer stops Nichols in opener

    Women's soccer

    Clark 3, Nichols 1: Isabella Ramirez tallied to snap a 1-1 tie in the 67th minute to propel the host Cougars (1-0) past the Bison (0-1-1).

    Georgia Louis scored early for Clark and assisted on the other two goals, including the insurance marker by Isabel Echeverry in the 77th minute.

    Grace Killman netted Nichols' tying goal in the first half.

    Men's soccer

    WPI 2, Worcester State 1: Brady Burch and Eli Marden struck in the second half, with Anthony Previte and Aaron Vaz assisting, for the host Engineers in the opener for both teams. Former North High star Mohmmaed-kadar Yussu converted a penalty kick for Worcester State in the 87th minute.

    Holy Cross 1, Harvard 1: Evan Jones scored his second goal of the season in the 66th minute for the visiting Crusaders (1-1-1), but the Crimson (0-0-1) pulled even a little more than seven minutes later. HC's Josh Tubbs had six saves.

    Field hockey

    Clark 2, Worcester State 0: Ciaran Cubbage scored early in the second quarter, and Jenna Beauchain tallied late in the fourth as the visiting Cougars topped the Lancers in the opener for both teams. Loren Root had eight saves to post the shutout.

    Colby-Sawyer 4, Fitchburg State 0: Jenna Morse and Amber Bates combined for 10 saves as the visiting Falcons (0-2) fell to the host Chargers (2-0).

    Westfield State 4, Nichols 1: Kaelyn Casper scored in the second quarter, assisted by Sofia Calabro, for the Bison (0-2) in a consolation loss to the Owls (1-1) at the Caryl Newhof Classic at Smith College in Northampton.

    Women's tennis

    Nichols 5, St. Anselm 2: Antonia Carrero, Charis Vogler and Johanna Schroeder won in singles and doubles for the host Bison in their season opener in Dudley.

    Women's volleyball

    WPI 3, Nichols 1: Lily Eldridge dished out 33 assists with 11 digs and served for the final two points as the host Engineers (1-1) held off the Bison (0-1). Haylee Granato had nine kills and 11 points for Nichols. Set scores were 23-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-22.

    Wentworth 3, Worcester State 1; Worcester State 3, Johnson & Wales 2: The Lancers split their first two matches of the season at Wentworth in Boston, with Angela Colonis collecting nine kills and 18 digs in the five-set second match against the Wildcats. Colonis had nine kills and 20 digs, and Katie Cueva added 10 kills and six digs in the opener for Worcester State, which won its first set of the season, 28-26, before dropping the next three to the Leopards.

    Stonehill 3, Holy Cross 2; Purdue-Fort Wayne 3, Holy Cross 2: Gracie Reisman collected 18 kills, and Abbie Lane and Gabby Wold had nine each for HC (1-2) in a loss to Stonehill to start the day at the Skyhawk Invitational in North Easton. In the second match, Lane had 17 kills, Reisman 15 and Wold 14.

    Rhode Island College 3, Fitchburg State 1: Stephanie Sardella had 12 kills and 19 digs, and Samantha Mirra and Jessica Greco contributed with 22 digs each for the host Falcons in a season-opening loss to the Anchorwomen. Set scores were 21-25, 25-22, 25-19, 26-24.

    Hartford 3, Anna Maria 0: Gia Hall had 15 assists, 8 digs and 2 aces for the visiting AmCats in a season-opening loss. Set scores were 25-12, 25-13, 25-20.

    Men's cross-country

    Wheaton & Babson Season Opener: Joseph Mahon (15:49) and Joseph Ryan (15:54) placed 1-2 over 5K, sparking Holy Cross (32) to the title in the nine-team event at Highland Park in Attleboro.

    Liam Lyons placed sixth for HC, immediately followed by teammate William Schimitsch, both in 16:08.

    Sheehan Invitational: Taban Manyok (27:39) prevailed over 8K, sparking Fitchburg State to a repeat as team champion. Former Millbury High runner Michael Burns was second in 28:18.

    Samuel Edwards (Parker Charter) placed third in 29:55, and former Wachusett Regional runner Joshua Lancaster was fifth in 30:05.

    Women's cross-country

    Wheaton & Babson Season Opener: Abigail Hughes (second, 11:23), Caroline Gage (fourth, 11:41), Shannon Kelly (11:48, seventh) and Anna Stolarick (12:00, 10th) propelled Holy Cross (32) to the team title over 3,000 meters at Highland Park in Attleboro.

    Sheehan Invitational: Skye Goba won the 5K race in 21:04, and Gwendolyn Connors of Ayer was second in 22:15, sparking host Fitchburg State to an impressive season-opening victory in Leominster.

    Sizer School graduate Amanda King was fifth in 24:36, Aria DiCato of Fitchburg was ninth in 28:06, and Julia Arena of Shrewsbury rounded out the top 10 in 28:13.
