2 teens charged in fight at Worcester high school soccer game

WORCESTER ― Two Worcester teenagers have been arraigned in court on charges related to a fight that took place during a soccer game.

The game between the boys' teams of Doherty Memorial and South high schools descended into chaos when, according to video posted by WHDH-TV , a player on South High appeared to twice kick a Doherty player who had fallen to the ground.

The video shows the two players running close to the sideline when the South High player seems to commit a routine foul, knocking the Doherty player to the ground. The South High player than appears to kick the Doherty player as he tries to stand back up and then again in the area of the head as he lay on the ground.

Several Doherty players then run over toward the South player, creating a further incident that was not caught on camera.

Worcester Public Schools issued a statement about the game, stating, "The students involved in the altercation are being subjected to disciplinary action by their schools, teams, and potentially law enforcement."

The Worcester police confirmed that two 18-year-olds were issued a summons for assault and battery, and deferred all further questions to the Worcester County District Attorney's Office, which did not immediately respond to a Telegram & Gazette request for further comment.

The Worcester police did not confirm whether the two 18-year-olds who were charged were students or members of the soccer team.

The game in question took place Sept. 16 at South High.
