Joya's review: Cozy vibes, seriously good food

It may not come with the prestige of a James Beard Award, but being featured in our weekly food column is nothing to sneeze at.

What I ate: The breakfast sandwich at Joya's , Avishar Barua's cozy Bengali-American brunch cafe in Worthington.

Dig in: It has layers of fluffy scrambled eggs, bacon, chives and chutneys, which are similar to relishes, with a bit of sweet heat. A surprising highlight was the potato pav, a soft Indian roll that cleanly holds it all together.

    • The sandwich was a little smaller than I anticipated for its $13 price tag.

Silver lining: I went back to the counter for a doughnut with subtly sweet rose-water glaze ($3) to pair with my iced rose mocha latte ($6).

    • I've been on a floral flavor kick lately and both hit the spot.

Vibe check: A toy monkey hangs from the menu board. Guests bring Uno cards to their seats to mark order numbers.

    • Plus: This nerd was happy to find a Super Nintendo console with Mario Kart and Donkey Kong.

The bottom line: Barua's food is seriously good — and I like that he doesn't take it too seriously.

Stop by: 9am-2pm Tuesday and 8am-2pm Wednesday-Sunday. 657 High St., Worthington.
