DANVILLE, WV (WOWK) – A local veteran who dedicated his life to service has been repaid in a big way for his sacrifice.

Retired U.S. Army Sergeant Robert Cowan was given the keys to a newly renovated home in Danville, mortgage-free! It was donated by the Military Warriors Support Foundation in partnership with Bank of America.

Sgt. Cowan was born and raised in the Mountain State and served in the U.S. Army as a medic in high-risk obstetrics and labor and delivery. He was wounded in combat while deployed in Iraq in December 2004. He medically retired in 2009.

“There are things that it relieves and things that it frees up that makes it so much better and so much easier for me to reach those goals. Resources that I can redirect toward college, toward helping my children, other goals I have,” said Sgt. Cowan. “It’s a little hard to feel that it’s deserved because there are a lot of comrades, including friends, who either didn’t come home or came home with troubles worse than myself.”

During his years of service, Sgt. Cowan has been awarded the Army Commendation Medal with Valor and the Combat Medical Badge, among other honors.
