    Customers without power in northeastern Kentucky

    KENTUCKY, WV (WOWK) – Kentucky Power officials say severe storms that swept through northeastern Kentucky left more than 12,000 of their customers without power.

    They say the National Weather Service confirmed gusts of up to 92 miles per hour. The NWS also confirmed a tornado in Boyd County.

    As of 8:45 p.m., the Kentucky Power outage map is reporting a total of 9,910 customers without power in our viewing area.

    The company says Boyd County has 7,576 outages, Carter County has 455 outages, Greenup County has 1,041 outages, Lawrence County has 833 outages, and Lewis County has less than 5 outages. Kentucky Power is not reporting any outages for their customers in Elliott, Floyd, Johnson, Martin or Pike counties.

    Officials say crews are finding “significant damage” in their distribution system, which includes broken polls, spans of downed wire, broken crossarms and numerous found trees. They are currently working to assess all of the damage.

    For more specific information about outages impacting their area, customers can subscribe to the company’s outage alert system or download their app . Customers can also report outages at 1-800-572-1113.

    Kentucky Power is reminding people to stay away from downed power lines as they can carry an electric current that can cause serious and fatal injuries. If you see a downed power line, call 911 and your power company immediately.
