‘Wet’ or ‘Dry’ vote on the ballot for Flatwoods, Ky

FLATWOODS, KY (WOWK) — To drink or not to drink, that’s the question for Flatwoods, Kentucky residents, and the answer will come after the primary election on Tuesday.

On the ballot, voters will choose whether the city should allow alcohol sales. 13 News spoke with locals who are sharing mixed feelings on the subject.

For people like Nick Hager, they believe nothing will change but the city would benefit from the alcohol sales revenue.

“I think it’d be great honestly. You know, people bring it from Ashland and stuff anyways, so I think it would be a great way to bring tax dollars to flatwoods and kind of improve things around here a little bit,” Hager says.

Surrounding areas like Greenup, Russell, and Ashland are already ‘Wet’ but some are saying while they agree this change would boost revenue, they’re worried this could cause an increase in crime and possibly more problems down the road.

Flatwoods resident Bobby Burnatt says he’s lived in other cities where the majority voted “Wet” and he believes the quality of life in those communities went downhill fast.

“Any community that I’ve ever been involved in or lived in that has allowed the sales of alcohol. It’s just a whole other chapter of problems… It doesn’t seem like it’s going to be that big of a deal, everybody thinks that it won’t cause any trouble but it does,” Burnatt says.

Some voters are still undecided, but in the end, whether the city stays “Dry” or becomes “Wet” will be determined Tuesday night.
