CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – West Virginia’s primary election set the stage for a Steve Williams vs. Patrick Morrisey battle for governor. But less than a week later, there was a report this weekend that U.S. Senator Joe Manchin was still thinking about getting into the race, and even replacing Williams on the ticket.

Even though the primary is over, there are mechanisms in place that could have allowed for that. However, gubernatorial candidate and Huntington mayor Williams spoke with WOWK 13 News and says there is no truth to that plan. He had even just taken a call with Manchin before speaking with us.

“Joe and I have met several times since election day, so when I first started hearing it, it wasn’t anything I was worried about, but this is body politic and this is just how it works,” Williams said.

As for Manchin, WOWK 13 News has reached out to his team for a comment, but so far, we’ve heard no words for his plans when his term in the U.S. Senate comes to an end in January.
