WVSU to get $50M for new agriculture research center

KANAWHA COUNTY, WV (WOWK) – West Virginia State University will receive $50 million for a new, state-of-the-art agricultural research center, after all.

The funding passed earlier this week during the West Virginia Legislature’s special session. The project was originally announced during West Virginia Governor Jim Justice’s State of the State speech, but the legislature failed to approve the money during the regular session.

After the proposal was cut from the budget in the regular session, University President Ericke’s Cage said he was surprised and disappointed that funding for the lab didn’t make the cut but was “cautiously optimistic” that it would be revisited in the special session.

The new research laboratory will be the home of the new School of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources at WVSU.
