7 taken to hospital for CO poisoning at Braxton County motel

Editor’s Note: Initial reports to WOWK 13 News stated that 60 patients were taken to the hospital after a carbon monoxide leak at the Microtel Inn in Sutton, West Virginia. Officials now tell 13 News that there were about 60 people in the hotel, and only seven were transported for medical treatment. This article has been updated to reflect this information.

UPDATE: (1:40 p.m. Monday, May 27) – As of Monday afternoon, five of the patients treated by Braxton Memorial Hospital have been released, and the sixth remains hospitalized, according to Angela S. Jones, Assistant Vice President of Media and Marketing Communications of WVU Medicine.

There is no word yet on if the patient taken to CAMC is still hospitalized.

BRAXTON COUNTY, WV (WOWK) — Seven people were taken to the hospital after a reported carbon monoxide leak at a Microtel Inn in Sutton. Officials say 60 occupants were in the hotel at the time.

Six of the patients were treated at WVU Braxton Memorial Hospital, and one was transported to CAMC, according to John Hoffman, director of Braxton County Office of Emergency Services.

According to Braxton County 911, the leak was reported around 2 a.m. on Sunday. Officials evacuated the inn’s occupants and EMS transported seven of them to the hospital for potential CO poisoning. There were no reported deaths.

Officials were also able to identify the source of the CO and are currently working to fix it. Members of the Gassaway, Flatwoods and Sutton Volunteer Fire Departments were on scene alongside the Fire Marshal.

13 News reached out to Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham Gassaway/Sutton where they said they are not closed at this time.
