IRONTON, OH (WOWK)- The city of Ironton, Ohio, hosted its 156th Memorial Day Parade Monday. The event is one of the longest-running Memorial Day Parades in the nation.

As with each year, thousands of people lined the streets to remember those who lost their lives while serving in the United States military.

The Ironton Memorial Day Parade dates back to 1868 and has continued every year since. It even survived the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic .

For some families in attendance, military service goes back generations.

“This is a show of patriotism and honors our veterans. Me, my dad, and my two brothers served. My wife’s Dad was a double heart recipient, so we come out here to honor them and all the veterans,” said Greg Mougey, a U.S. Navy veteran.

Hundreds of first responders, marching bands, and veterans participated in the parade, marching proudly to the applause of the crowds.

People from all walks of life and parts of the country attended to honor those who served, past and present. Bryson Lewis, a young man from Ironton who has attended the Memorial Day Parade as long as he can remember, reflected on what the day means to him.

“You support all the people that fought for our country and the parade. You hang around with your family and enjoy yourself. I feel like that’s really what Memorial Day should be and what it is,” said Lewis.

James King, a U.S. Army veteran, has spent his entire life in Ironton. He spoke on how special Memorial Day and the Ironton Memorial Day Parade has been in his life.

“The military is a big part of this country. And it’s a pretty special day, it’s time to get out and celebrate a little bit,” said King.

As time passes by, one thing remains consistent, the Ironton Memorial Day Parade will hold its 157th Parade next year. Same time, same place.
