MILTON, WV (WOWK) — A volunteer fire department in Cabell County is getting a makeover.

Officials say the department feels the impact of financial stress, just like anyone else. The department’s community room was designed more than twenty years ago and has not had routine maintenance since.

The space has a long history of holding events, not just for the fire department but for the community as well.

Officials at the fire department knew they needed an upgrade, so they applied for the Lowe’s Hometown Grant.

“Yeah so we’re really excited about this because we’re not only doing the renovations but we’re trying to rebrand. We’re hoping to rename this room to be something specific whether that’s after somebody that’s a fallen firefighter from the past or someone that’s retired from here or someone that’s been really vital to the success of the fire department.” Says Jonathan Black, a Firefighter and EMT.

After several weeks of working closely with Lowe’s on grant proposals, the Milton Volunteer Fire Department was granted $142,000 to start the new project.

The construction has started, and now the back parking lot has been paved. Officials from the department say they are hoping the process will be completed by mid-November.
