KANAWHA COUNTY, WV (WOWK) — The Kanawha County Commission checked in with the only Tyler Mountain Volunteer Fire Department board member on Thursday.

This comes after turmoil at the Tyler Mountain VFD where all board members but one — Barry Holstein — and the fire chief resigned.

Holstein said in July that West Virginia State Fire Commission bylaws indicate that Assistant Chief Thomas Robinson with Tyler Mountain Volunteer Fire Department will now act as fire chief.

Holstein told Kanawha County Commissioners on Thursday there are currently 17 firefighters certified to respond to fires. He also said the insurance and legal paperwork is all in place, and that calls are being answered.

The commission said they are ready to step in and help where it is needed.

“If we can offer that through C. W. Sigman and our emergency management, they can have an effective election that’s one that’s done by the community of Cross Lanes,” Commission President Lance Wheeler said. “I think that’s where you’re going to see a lot of great progress of them moving forward and staying operational.”

The Tyler Mountain VFD will meet next and will vote on a new board in September.
