CHAPMANVILLE, WV (WOWK) — A year after Sergeant Cory Maynard of the West Virginia State Police was shot and killed in the line of duty, the community has stepped up to honor his memory.

On Saturday, Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College hosted its 2nd annual memorial softball tournament at Chapmanville’s Ted Ellis Field to honor Maynard’s memory and raise money for a scholarship for first responders.

“Said hey you wanna coach this team? I said sure I’ll do it. It’s for a good cause, yeah. I’ll do it,” said Evan Riggis, one of the team coaches. “At the end of it all, hearing Crystal say how much money we raised in scholarships to get more students in and help them out, that’s probably the most exciting thing about it.”

Fourteen teams signed up to play, helping the foundation move closer to the $50,000 fundraising goal.

“I’m from southern West Virginia, so I know how difficult it is to come to college, and even though we’re the most affordable college in West Virginia, our folks still have struggles coming to college. So, whatever we can do to raise money, whatever our foundation can do to raise funds to help the students, that’s what we’re here for,” said Pamela Alderman, the president of Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College.
