CABELL COUNTY, WV (WOWK) – A man facing several charges in connection to a deadly Cabell County Crash last year appeared in court Monday morning.

The Cabell County Court hearing comes after a psychological evaluation was requested in April for Samuel McCoy. The judge set a pretrial hearing for Sept. 9, but they are still waiting on the report from the evaluation.

The charges against McCoy stem from a deadly crash during a police pursuit in Huntington last fall.

The chase began Monday, Oct. 23 in Wayne County after McCoy allegedly failed to stop for drug enforcement officers. The chase went into Cabell County on 5th Street, forcing an officer off the road in the process of the chase. The vehicle then went onto 8th Avenue where McCoy allegedly drove through a red light at the 20th Street intersection, striking an SUV.

Two men and two teenagers were in the SUV, and all four were taken to the hospital for medical treatment, authorities said after the crash. The 16-year-old passenger died from his injuries.

According to court records, McCoy was indicted on the following charges:

    • Driving under the influence causing death
    • Driving under the influence causing serious bodily injury – three counts
    • Fleeing in a vehicle causing death
    • Fleeing in a vehicle causing bodily injury – three counts
    • Fleeing in a vehicle while driving under the influence
    • Fleeing in a vehicle with reckless indifference

McCoy pleaded not guilty to the Cabell County charges against him in March. He remains in the Western Regional Jail on a $181,500 cash-only bond.
