Mayor Scott Elliott says his search could be slow and steady. He wants to take his time to ensure that Dunbar appoints the right man for the job.

Elliott says the right man for the job will be a decisive leader, who can hold himself and others accountable, make tough decisions, and uphold the integrity of the department and the city.

“Look out for a guy that knows them well enough that if there is something wrong with our policies and procedures, use of force, or internal affairs, that we fix the issue,” Elliott said.

In July 2022, a man named Michael Scott, Jr. was fatally injured while in police custody . A medical examiner determined he died from blunt force injuries to the head after he was slammed into the pavement by police, according to a complaint.

No criminal charges have been filed in either case, but Elliott says two officers remain suspended in connection to both.

Elliott says whoever he selects as the best candidate must be approved by a majority city council vote.

In the meantime, Lieutenant Owen Barker has been named interim chief.
