CABELL COUNTY, WV (WOWK) – Back to school is one of the most exciting times as a child, but it also comes with an increased risk of danger.

Putnam County Sheriff Bobby Eggleton said the start of the school year is the most hectic, and his office will have extra deputies ensuring that school zone speed limits are followed, which he said is 15 mph.

“You have to remember the kids are going to be very excited. They’re going to be running around. The small children especially, aren’t going to be paying attention,” Putnam County Sheriff Bobby Eggleton said.

Keith Thomas, Director of Health and Safety for Cabell County Schools called back-to-school season a great way to bond with your kids.

“I encourage parents — because it’s a golden opportunity — to spend some quality time with your kids, to sit down and discuss the safety patterns for the upcoming school year,” Thomas said.

Safety patterns like making sure kids know how to walk on the sidewalk, turn on a flashlight when it’s dark, or even how to call for help. These are just some of the small things that make all the difference in the world when your child is on their way to school.

“Checking in with them on a daily basis, understanding what they are seeing when they are going to school and also what they are seeing when they come home from school.” Thomas said.

Thomas said children walking alone should wear something bright or reflective, and no children should be wearing headphones. Children should also focus on actively taking in the environment around them.
