CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — Just in time for back-to-school season, West Virginia is launching a contest to help kids eat healthy. On Monday, West Virginia Governor Jim Justice announced the “West Virginia Healthy Habits Schools Challenge.”

Elementary school students can make a two-minute video of what’s being done to create healthy habits at their schools and can win up to $2,500. West Virginia children are among the unhealthiest in the nation, and leaders want to change that.

“The fact that we are number one in obesity for children means that we need to act now. It is so imperative that we get the right education. And normalize the conversation about healthy fruits and vegetables and fresh produce and make that part of the conversation,” said Dr. Sherri Young, West Virginia Secretary of Health.

Winning schools can use the money for exercise and athletic equipment at their schools.
The deadline to enter is November 5th and you can find more details on the Department of Health and Department of Education websites by clicking here.
