CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — A major sporting event – only in its second year in West Virginia -may not be coming back. That Tuesday from Governor Jim Justice in his weekly media briefing. The timing of this is interesting because the LIV Golf Tournament at the Greenbrier Resort begins Friday.

Last year was the first LIV Golf Tournament at the Greenbrier Resort. It replaced a PGA Golf Tournament that was held there for many years. This year the LIV Golf event returns this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, but its future after that is in doubt.

Governor Jim Justice, whose family owns the Greenbrier, says the golf league wants larger markets. The tour has current stops in Las Vegas, Hong Kong and other big cities. He says the LIV tournament helps promote West Virginia tourism, and it would be sad to see it leave.

“Without any question, it is absolutely wonderful for (Tourism Secretary) Chelsea Ruby and her group, to be able to do a lot of great marketing about West Virginia, with the LIV tournament here or the PGA tournament here, or the New Orleans Saints, or whatever it may be,” said Justice.

WOWK 13 News reached out to LIV Golf for comment, and a spokesman says next year’s schedule is still in development, so nothing is final. Its website indicates the next two tournaments are in Chicago and Dallas, which supports the governor’s suggestion that LIV wants its tournaments in places much larger than White Sulphur Springs and the Greenbrier.

The LIV Golf Tournament is a big deal for publicity since it airs nationwide on the CW-TV Network and is streamed worldwide on sites including Apple-TV.
