MALDEN, WV (WOWK) — A new mural in eastern Kanawha County is boasting its rich history and embracing its roots.

The piece of art at the Malden underpass celebrates some of the brightest parts of the area, like the iconic salt that is produced right down the street, as well as the African American leader and educator, Booker T. Washington, who worked in those salt furnaces. The state’s first African Zion Baptist church was also founded there.

“I’m hoping some more towns come in wanting to do additional murals so that we can start together, you know, put together kind of a driving tour of the artwork in the upper Kanawha Valley. So that, that would be fabulous,” said Sussie Salisbury, Vice President of the Community Development Charleston Area Alliance.

The mural is continued onto the other side of the overpass.
