HUNTINGTON, WV (WOWK) — Tuesday was the first day of Marshall University’s Week of Welcome where incoming freshmen started moving into their dorms and getting ready for class to begin on Aug. 19.

To help make the transition easier and help the class of 2028 meet their classmates, the Marshall welcome team had a breakfast and bingo night at the Memorial Student Center.

Incoming freshman were treated to a free breakfast meal and had the chance to win items for their dorm rooms by winning rounds of bingo. The prizes included television sets, gift cards, vacuums, and more.

13 News spoke with Luke Pyles, a Marshall University freshman from Point Pleasant. He said he’s feeling confident heading into this new chapter in life.

“I know a lot of people were nervous and a lot of my friends were, but as far as I go, I’m pretty confident, so I’m good. Mostly I just want to meet new people, because there’s a lot of people here from all over and I’d love to just open up my perspective to new people and new places,” said Pyles.

Marshall University is expected to welcome 2,100 new students as a part of their freshman class, and around 1,500 people registered for the Week of Welcome.

13 News spoke with incoming freshman Akira Lenoir, who is adjusting well to college life.

“I was nervous at first, but then you start talking to people around here and it just makes everything so much more easier. I’m much more relaxed,” said Lenoir.
