KANAWHA COUNTY, WV (WOWK) – Kanawha County Schools are back in session on Friday, and first responders are once again asking drivers to make sure they slow down.

Law enforcement agencies around the county are beefing up patrol with more squad cars and ambulances in school zones. Kanawha County Sheriff Mike Rutherford says through the Operation GPA program, they haven’t seen an accident in more than 20 years.

Superintendent Dr. Tom Williams says he doesn’t have sympathy for fast drivers.

“If you pass a school bus, I hope you get caught, and I hope you get a ticket. If you’re speeding in a school zone, I hope you get caught, and I hope you get a ticket.,” Williams said. “Yes it’s slow and everyone gets in a hurry. Leave a little bit early. Because the lives of our kids are paramount. They’re our future, and no one wants to see a child hurt.”

Students across Kanawha County will head back to class Friday. To see when school starts in your county, click here.
