CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – The West Virginia Board of Education has received the annual report on the Mountain State’s assessment data for the past school year. And, while two of the three categories went up by one percentage point, the state is still showing less than 50% proficiency in mathematics, English Language Arts/reading and science.

According to the West Virginia Department of Education, the 2024 state summative assessment results include results from the West Virginia General Summative Assessment for grades 3-8, the SAT School Day for 11th graders, and the West Virginia Alternative Summative Assessment for grades 3-8 and 11. The results come from the WVDE’s Office of Assessment.

The WVDE says 95% of West Virginia students in those designated grades took one of the assessments.

The results show West Virginia had a 45% proficiency in ELA/reading, up from 44% in the previous academic year. Mathematics also went up a percentage point, with results showing 36% proficiency compared to 35% the previous year.

Science, however, remained at 29% proficiency.

According to the charts, results that exceed and meet standards are considered proficient. Results that partially or do not meet standards are considered not proficient.

The WVDE says the results did show a 6% increase in third graders’ proficiency in English Language Arts. and a 7% decrease in the number of students who did not meet the standard in last year’s assessments. According to the WVDE, the Third Grade Success Act of 2023 and the WVDE Ready, Read, Write, West Virginia literacy initiative both helped contribute to the change.

According to the WVDE, a new Unite with Numeracy initiative set to launch this fall will also target improving mathematics proficiency.

WVDE officials say the percentages, which are all higher than those of the 2020-2021 school year following the pandemic, are starting to approach pre-COVID-19 levels in the state. The proficiency levels in the 2018-2019 school year were 46% for ELA/reading, 39% for mathematics and 33% for science.

There was no assessment for the 2019-2020 school year, which was interrupted by COVID-19. In the 2020-2021 school year, the percentages had dropped to 40% for ELA/reading, 28% for mathematics and 28% for science.
