JACKSON COUNTY, WV (WOWK) – First responders in Jackson County, West Virginia, took part in a training exercise aimed at equipping them, along with bus drivers and other personnel, with the necessary skills to handle emergencies.

The training session took place at Parchment Valley Baptist Camp in Ripley.

The rollover training was organized by Jackson County Schools Transportation along with a combined effort of first responders.

County-wide training included both theoretical and practical components. Participants learned about emergency evacuation procedures, safety equipment use, communication protocols, and student management.

“Tragedies are inevitable, they’re going to happen. But, it’s how we respond to them and how we interact with other agencies and get the task done and ultimately save lives. And what better venue and what bigger venue than the county children that are involved,” said Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellinger. “Even if we lose one life, that’s one too many. So we need to take what precautions we have collectively as a team and move forward and make it better.”

The bus used for the rollover simulation replicated real-life conditions, providing participants with a realistic experience.

Jackson County Schools said they are committed to maintaining high safety standards and will continue to invest in training programs to ensure the well-being of its students and staff.
