KANAWHA COUNTY, WV (WOWK) — A new state-of-the-art school building years in the making. A ribbon-cutting for the new Clendenin Elementary School was held on Thursday afternoon.

For eight years, the Clendenin community has been without an elementary school. The old school was severely damaged in the deadly 2016 floods that ripped through the state.

After years of learning out of portable, temporary buildings, the new state-of-the-art facility will be ready for the 2024-2025 school year, which starts on Friday morning.

Angel Gurski, the principal of Clendenin Elementary School, said. “It represents final closure of the 2016 flood. Many of the staff were also flooded in their personal homes and it just feels like we’ve finally made it.”

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was at 1 p.m., followed by tours of the new school at 2 p.m.

The elementary school is on Elk River Road North in Clendenin.

The school year starts tomorrow morning where the new school is ready to welcome back 55 members of staff and 330 students.
