MASON/ROANE COUNTIES, WV (WOWK) – Some students may struggle with the stress of returning to the classroom or arriving for the first time, but one West Virginia program is helping by having man’s best friend step in to help.

Two more West Virginia schools were introduced to their new Friends With Paws therapy dogs on Wednesday. First Lady Cathy Justice, West Virginia Governor Jim Justice and their English bulldog Babydog introduced Farley and Flora to their new friends at their assigned schools.

Farley and Flora are a brother-sister duo of golden retrievers. Flora was assigned to Spencer Middle School in Roane County, and Farley will go to work at Point Pleasant Jr../Sr. High School in Mason County.

“I truly believe that everyone should experience the incredible presence of a therapy dog,” First Lady Cathy Justice said. “Today, Flora and Farley demonstrated their remarkable ability to provide comfort and support from the moment they arrived. There is no doubt in my mind that these wonderful dogs will become invaluable assets to Spencer Middle and Point Pleasant High School. Both Roane and Mason counties are fortunate to welcome these loving companions into their communities.”

The dogs are trained to provide comfort and support to people in tense environments, which will go a long way in helping students who may find themselves struggling emotionally in the classroom. Cathy Justice’s office says research has also shown that the simple act of petting an animal can release an automatic relaxation response.
