    Columbus man pleads not guilty to shooting woman in face in Kanawha County

    KANAWHA COUNTY, WV (WOWK) — A Columbus man has pleaded not guilty to charges in a Kanawha County shooting.

    Aweis Abdi, 29, is accused of shooting a woman in the face in Rand back in March and fleeing the scene.

    Abdi was indicted in July on charges of malicious wounding, wanton endangerment and prohibited person in possession of a firearm. He pleaded not guilty to those charges in an arraignment hearing on Aug. 15, according to the Kanawha County Circuit Clerk’s Office.

    The Circuit Clerk’s Office says a trial for Abdi has been set for 9 a.m. on Oct. 7, 2024, with a pretrial hearing set for 9:30 a.m. Sept. 25.

    Aweis Abdi, 29, was arrested after a shooting in the 300 block of Davidson Avenue just before 11 p.m. on March 6, the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office said at the time.

    They said Abdi, the victim and a child were in the vehicle that fled from the scene.

    The vehicle was stopped in Cabell County and Abdi was uncooperative and would not give his name to the police, according to a criminal complaint.

    The woman was taken to the hospital and was in stable condition. The child was unharmed, according to the KCSO.

    Abdi remains in the South Central Regional Jail on a $75,000 bond.
