LOGAN COUNTY, WV (WOWK) – Some renovations at a Logan County school are pushing the school’s start date back.

While the rest of Logan County Schools will head to the classroom on Monday, Aug. 19, students at Logan Middle School will not begin until Wednesday, Aug. 21. The school’s open house will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20.

When do West Virginia students go back to school?

According to Logan County Schools Superintendent Jeff Huffman, renovations at the school are going as planned, and much of the work has been completed over the summer to minimize disrupting the students. However, he says delaying the start date for LMS will allow the contractors more time to clean up along the front of the school.

“The LMS staff is looking forward to welcoming everyone to the island Tuesday evening and kicking the school year off the following day,” said Huffman. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

At a WV Board of Education meeting in July, West Virginia Department of Education officials said the project to fix the foundation of LMS could cost nearly $3 million. WVDE officials also said they wanted to know why the foundation needed to be fixed in the first place.

During that WVBE meeting, the board mentioned that the school is only around 27 years old, and should not be sinking. Logan County School officials said they’re working on a structural stabilization project due to the settlement of the fitters.

Officials said the project involved installing 220 push piers around the exterior of the building which crews connected to the foundation. Some masonry walls inside the building are also being replaced along with some cosmetic repairs and upgrades.
