CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — Struggling childcare centers across the mountain state have cited not enough state dollars being invested in their programs to keep up with daily demands, but West Virginia’s Department of Human Services (DOHS) said there are enough dollars to last.

Through the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) fund, the DOHS said it will keep supporting childcare centers until the end of 2024, shutting down claims that these funds would run out by Sept. 1.

“With the dollars that we’ve been using for paying for childcare by enrollment, we have limited dollars to pay for those,” DOHS Cabinet Secretary Cynthia Persily said. “We’re using temporary aid for needy families’ dollars to pay for childcare right now. Those dollars are going to run out, sometime probably at the end of the year.”

Persily said if these TANF dollars run out by the end of this year, lawmakers could dip into reserve funds to keep childcare centers afloat.
