PUTNAM COUNTY, WV (WOWK) – Hundreds of students and teachers across the region are back in the classroom, but a couple of counties are just getting started!

Putnam County Schools had their first day of school Thursday, and students at Conner Street Elementary were glad to be back!

“Just very excited, you know. We – the teachers – have been in the building for a week, and we’ve been planning fun activities for the kids,” said Conner Street Elementary Principal Sara Rooper. “We’ve been doing professional development and continuing education. We’re all excited just to get the kids back in the building and get the school year underway.”

Now that school buses are back on the roads carrying precious cargo, you’ll want to remember to slow down on your morning and evening commutes.

Schools in Lincoln, Raleigh, McDowell, Mercer, Monroe, Braxton and Taylor counties also started back Thursday. Clay and Wyoming counties will start back on Friday.

The schools starting up next week include Hancock, Tucker, Webster, Greenbrier and Summers counties on Monday, Aug. 26, and Mingo County will be the last school heading back. Their classes start on Wednesday, Aug. 28.
