KANAWHA COUNTY, WV (WOWK) – A Charleston mother accused of child neglect was convicted by virtue of a guilty plea after her children were found injured during a well-being check last year.

The Kanawha County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office says Capree Moss, 22, of Charleston, appeared in court Thursday for the plea hearing.

According to Kanawha County court records, Moss was indicted in March on charges of child neglect creating risk of bodily injury or death.

Moss’ sentencing in the case is set for Oct. 10, 2024. She faces at least one year and up to five years in a state correctional facility.

The original criminal complaint from the Kanawha County Magistrate Court says Moss was at an apartment in the Renaissance Circle with her children, ages 3 and 1, when the Charleston Police Department was called in to perform a wellness check.

The officers said the children had “significant external facial, neck and bodily injuries and internal head injuries.” Both children were taken to a local hospital with one even being admitted to the ICU.

The complaint said that the injuries the police found happened over the course of Nov. 17 to Nov. 21, 2023, but neither Moss nor her boyfriend, who was present at the time the injuries occurred, attempted to seek medical treatment for the children.
