KANAWHA COUNTY, WV (WOWK) – West Virginia Congresswoman Carol Miller (R) took time Thursday to tour the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority headquarters.

During her visit, Miller met with EMS and county officials, as well as talked about a bill she introduced with some of her colleagues that would allow seniors on Medicare to receive at-home emergency medical care.

The Improving Access to Emergency Medical Services for Seniors Act would let first responders provide care in minor medical incidents on the spot rather than spend valuable time and resources transporting patients to the hospital.

“I do have a bill that will, basically, allow you to be treated in place. So, many of the small towns that we have may not be close to a hospital and EMTs come out. And if they are able to take care of you right then and solve the problem instead of loading you up and instead of taking you 20-40 minutes away to a hospital,” said Miller.

According to the National Library of Medicine, patients who receive at-home interventions have a lower risk of re-admission and a lower risk of long-term care admission compared to those who receive in-hospital care.
