WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV ( WVNS ) — Democratic candidate for West Virginia Governor, Steve Williams, issued a statement requesting an investigation into the “misuse of funds” at The Greenbrier.

According to a press release, Williams, the current Huntington mayor, asked sitting Attorney General Patrick Morrisey (R-WV) to launch a formal investigation into the alleged misuse of funds by Governor Jim Justice’s companies. The request stated the investigation was into multiple things involving the Greenbrier and money.

The request asked the Attorney General to look into the alleged failure to pay $3.5 million in sales taxes collected at the Greenbrier Resort to the state, the Justice Companies’ failure to pay $2.4 million in health care premiums for workers at The Greenbrier; and the failure to pay back a $36 million loan under the CARES Act.

Attorney General Patrick Morrisey is the Republican opponent of Mayor Williams in the upcoming race for West Virginia Governor. Williams spoke on the request and how shocking the potential misuse of funds is.

Greenbrier won’t be sold after deal is reached

Attorney General Patrick Morrisey has repeatedly claimed that ‘fighting fraud, waste, abuse, and corruption’ has been a top priority since he took office. Yet, we now face the shocking revelation that the Governor’s business interests have apparently diverted funds—collected from employees and patrons through health insurance contributions and sales tax revenue—away from their intended purposes. This is a serious issue that not only violates the law but also betrays the public trust.

The Governor’s business is in essence, using funds that should go to the state and their employees health insurance plan, as well as taxpayers dollars made available through the CARES Act, and that’s wrong. The people of West Virginia deserve better.

If fighting corruption is truly a priority for our Attorney General, then he must act swiftly to investigate these claims. West Virginians deserve transparency and accountability from those who hold the highest offices in our state

The alleged issues at the Greenbrier are not the only legal problems being dealt with by companies owned by Gov. Justice.
