WILLIAMSON, WV (WOWK) – The Williamson City Council held an emergency meeting Tuesday night to discuss more leadership changes in the city.

The current interim mayor, Joseph Bucci, submitted his resignation effective immediately on Tuesday, according to Williamson City Attorney Nathan Brown. This comes just three months after Bucci was appointed to the position.

“He resigned effective immediately. The council has not accepted the resignation yet, but he did resign,” Brown said. “From what I understand, he resigned for personal reasoning.”

Bucci was not present at the meeting, and Brown said he submitted his resignation earlier in the day. This once again left the city’s mayoral seat empty.

The meeting had originally been classified as an emergency meeting, but council members went into executive session and decided the meeting should instead be treated as a “special session.”

However, no further action was taken by the council Tuesday night. The city council will meet again at 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 30 to discuss filling the vacant seat.

The area’s leadership issues started when former mayor Charles Hatfield resigned before pleading guilty in a federal case. After his resignation, City Clerk Alma Smith was appointed for a short time before the city council agreed to offer Bucci the position.

Smith’s short tenure made her the first woman to be named Williamson Mayor.
