(WOWK) – The new drought monitor is out, and StormTracker 13 Meteorologists say that conditions have worsened across Appalachia.

Drought conditions in Athens, Meigs, Mason, Putnam, Calhoon, Wood, Wirt, Jackson and Roane Counties have been elevated to exceptional drought levels. Extreme and severe drought conditions continue to expand as we progress through our abnormally hot and dry week.

Rain showers and thunderstorms will move through this weekend, but rain totals will be nowhere near enough to alleviate the drought. Unfortunately, rain showers will favor areas outside of the extreme and exceptional drought. Take a look at the slideshow to see when the rain will blow through this Saturday.

The latest 6-10 day precipitation outlook suggests that slight relief could be instore for areas south of I-64, but unfortunately the same can’t be said for the areas of exceptional drought to the north.
