CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – The ongoing drought has had an impact on several aspects of life from farming and lowering water levels to brush fires and just trying to stay cool in the heat.

One other thing to keep on your radar is the impact it could have on your foundation. Some foundation experts say checking for cracks in bricks and drywall is important. And, if you notice signs, you should not water that foundation wall because it can cause erosion. Call a professional instead.

“You should look for doors that are sticking, windows that are sticking, drywall cracks, cracks in the foundation walls, cracks in bricks, separation of floorboards. Sometimes tiles will crack,” said Catherine Morrison, sales manager with Alford Foundation and Crawl Space Repair. “Those are, kind of, signs that the foundation is moving and needs looked at by a professional.”

Morrison says crawlspaces are also seeing a lot of damage due to hot, humid air, which leads to fungal growth and plumbing issues. If you haven’t checked your crawlspace in a while, it’s a good idea.
