POINT PLEASANT, WV (WOWK) – Point Pleasant is home to a one of its kind river museum and boating educational facility, and it is holding a grand reopening on Saturday.

“People think of it just as a museum, it’s an educational facility. It will teach you why we have our dams in place. Particularly during this drought,” Jackie Mollett, a Point Pleasant resident, said.

In 2018 the River Museum burned down and had to temporarily close its doors, now the staff is hard at work preparing for Saturday’s grand reopening.

“We have done a lot of progress. Just getting the artifacts in here and placing them in different places seeing what all there is and rearranging stuff,”  says Heather McCormick the Executive Assistant of the museum.

Since the fire started in the office area of the former building, many of the original artifacts and resources were saved.

Now with the new facility, there are some positive upgrades in the work.

The river museum is now home to newly updated boat simulators that allow participants to experience the feeling of the open water from anywhere in the world

“You have memories of the old one and now it’s gone and you can’t go back and revisit how it was before and some of the artifacts and history was ruined in that fire but now we get donations every day so we get new history that we can share with others,” Lily Teichman, a local High School student who works at the museum part-time, said.

While some of the history was lost, memories are irreplaceable. The museum will be holding its grand reopening this Saturday at noon, thanks to community support.
