HUNTINGTON, WV (WOWK) – A school in Cabell County is rallying around one of their student-athletes who was injured on the field Thursday.

According to St. Joseph Catholic Schools, a student at St. Joseph Middle School “suffered a serious injury” while on the field Thursday. The staff says they cannot provide any further details at this time due to HIPPA laws and out of respect for the family’s need for privacy.

The school did not specify what type of sport the student plays or if this was a practice or game. According to the school’s website , middle school sports include basketball, cheerleading, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, track and girl’s volleyball.

“We give thanks to God for the emergency medical staff as well as the hospital staff who administered wonderful care,” St. Joseph Catholic Schools Principal Carol Templeton said. “We ask for continued prayers for the student and family at this time.”

The student was injured less than a week after a middle school student in Boone County, 13-year-old Cohen Craddock , died of injuries he sustained on the football field. His father is now pushing for schools to use padded football helmets, called guardian caps , to reduce the impact of hits in hopes that no other families have to go through a similar tragedy.
