MINGO COUNTY, WV (WOWK) – A man was hospitalized after being hit by a city of Williamson Police cruiser, West Virginia State Police (WVSP) said.

According to Sgt. Jamie Harris of the WVSP, It happened around 11:30 p.m. Thursday night in the lanes heading north on 119 in the Delbarton area, just north of Scarlett Road. Sgt. Harris said that the victim was walking in the roadway in the construction zone when he was hit by the officer.

The man is in the intensive care unit at the hospital in critical condition, but he has been stabilized. The road was shut down for several hours while a reconstruction team investigated the scene.

The officer was driving an SUV style cruiser with a brush guard on the front at the time of the incident. Another officer was in the front seat and had a passenger in the back seat who was under arrest.

Sgt. Harris said the reconstruction and investigative report, which will help determine the speed at the time of the accident, will take a few weeks.
