UPDATE (12:52 P.M. Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024) – Construction on I-64 that caused a headache for drivers Wednesday morning will last at least two more weeks, according to the West Virginia Division of Highways.

The construction is to repair the bridge deck on I-64 just before the Montrose Drive exit.

Officials with the DOH said the bridgework requires closing the outer eastbound and westbound lanes of I-64. Two lanes will remain open in either direction. Later on, other lanes will be closed.

The DOH said during a press conference on Wednesday that the road will be torn up during the day, and they will be pouring concrete during the night. Wednesday was the first day this daytime work happened.

The speed limit has also been reduced to 50 mph, and there will be law enforcement in the area.

They’re hoping to have the project completed by Friday, Sept. 20.

SOUTH CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — Construction is causing a traffic backup on I-64 from the Montrose Drive exit down the road to Dunbar on Wednesday morning, according to dispatchers.

Right before the Montrose Drive exit, you can see congestion on both sides of the interstate on the WV511 cameras.

People trying to get off at the Dunbar exit to pass the congestion are almost at a standstill.
