CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — Two sets of bridges on the West Virginia Turnpike are receiving deck replacements, a month long project which officials say will likely cause traffic delays for those in the area.

Beginning at 7 p.m. on Sunday, the decks of both Skitter Creek bridges, located at milepost 62, and the Cabin Creek bridges, located at milepost 83, will start to be replaced, according to a release from the West Virginia Department of Transportation.

During construction, traffic will occasionally shift between northbound and southbound bridges.

“These projects will disrupt the normal flow of traffic on the north end of Turnpike, and we urge patrons to plan for additional travel time when traveling,” said Jeff Miller, executive director of the Parkways Authority.

The project, which falls under the Parkways Authority’s Accelerated Bridge Deck Replacement Program, will see both sets of bridges receiving new decks, taller central barrier walls and the Cabin Creek bridges will have special high friction pavement laid down.

“This work is very carefully planned, performed 24 hours a day during the duration of the project, and only done after the Labor Day weekend holiday so as not to disrupt heavy summer traffic,” Miller said.

Work on the Skitter Creek bridges is expected to be complete by Oct. 18, and work on the Cabin Creek bridges is expected to be complete by Oct. 28.

I came down the turnpike tonight. It was dangerous where they are working. The Paint Creek interchange is poorly marked as to where the lanes are in the dark. Then after coming through the toll booth at Cabin Creek, it goes down to 1 lane but not marked well with all those cars coming through multiple lanes into one. There is going to be a major accident at either one at some point.
