CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — West Virginia’s eastern panhandle is one of its most distinct geographical features, and one only needs to follow it in order to reach the easternmost part of the state.

The easternmost point is an intersection of borders between West Virginia, Maryland and Virginia. It lies between the Potomac River and the adjacent US-340.

The closest town to this point is Harpers Ferry , sitting just beyond where the Potomac Shenandoah Rivers meet. The town holds a great deal of history, most famously being the site of John Brown’s Raid , and it is also the lowest point in the state .

The boundary has been disputed in the past , most recently in 1997 when the boundary between West Virginia’s Jefferson County and Virginia’s Loudoun County was called into question along the Blue Ridge but was resolved by surveyors.
