HUNTINGTON, WV (WOWK) — It’s been 23 years since the worst terror attacks on American soil. On September 11th, 2001, the World Trade Center fell, the Pentagon was hit by a hijacked plane, and another plane went down in a field in Pennsylvania.

Almost 3,000 people were killed on that tragic day, and like many other communities in the U.S., Huntington, West Virginia is remembering the lives lost, and the first responders who sacrificed so much in the line of duty.

The Healing Field at the Spring Hill Cemetery is what many are calling a sight that’s a completely different experience in person.

“It’s very important that we continue to remember all those that perished that day and we need to make sure that people don’t forget that,” Spring Hill Cemetery Operations Manager Eldora McCoy says.

Each year, the Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District sets up the display, including a flag for each life that was taken during the 9/11 terror attacks.

In addition to the Healing Field, 75 more flags are set up for another tragedy that hits closer to home.

“We also have the 75 flags that are by the Marshall Memorial and that is dedicated to the 75 people that perished in 1970 with the plane crash,” McCoy says.

A tragic day, that has led to communities coming together to remember the lives lost and commending the men and women who fought to rescue as many people as possible that tragic day.

The Healing Field will be open to the public until the end of the week.
