MASON COUNTY, WV (WOWK) – The Mason County Commission has issued a burn ban for the county amid the ongoing drought.

According to the commission, the burn went into effect on Thursday, Sept. 19, and will remain in place until further notice. The commissioners say the decision was made due to the ongoing extreme drought conditions and abnormally dry weather that is still in the National Weather Service forecast.

Jackson County, West Virginia, under burn ban

On Tuesday, the neighboring Jackson County Commission also issued a burn ban, and Kanawha County’s Commission sent a letter to the governor and West Virginia Division of Forestry asking them to issue a ban.

Several counties in Ohio are also under a burn ban announced by the Ohio State Fire Marshal on Sept. 6. Those counties include Gallia, Jackson (OH), Meigs, Scioto, and Vinton counties in our region, along with nearby counties of Athens, Hocking, Pike and Ross counties.
